Vast areas of our territory are suitable for sheep
breeding.
Traditionally our country has been a big ovine producer. Some years ago,a record
amount of 28 million sheep was reached. Nowadays, as a result of the
world crisis, we have a wool stock of 13 million sheep, located mainly
in the northern and central areas of Uruguay. For the last months, there has been a
vertiginous recovery of wool values in the world market, reaching prices never seen
since 1995.
Should prices be kept, a gradual growth of the ovine
stock is foreseen. Uruguay has also, the most important tops industrial park in America.
Therefore since it does not cover demand with its domestic production, it turns to wool
supplies from Argentina, Chile and Brazil.
Ovine breeds produced in our territory are distributed as follows:
- 60% Corriedale
- 20% Merino
- 20% de Ideal, and others.
Given the green covered tapestry of our fields, excellent
yields at washing (up to 80%) are obtained, resulting wool of a good length, good resistance
and excellent color since the vegetal material is almost non-existent.
Wool production has the invaluable technical and practical support from S.U.L.(Secretariado
Uruguayo de la Lana), member of the S.I.L. (Secretariado Internacional de Lanas) the progress
in the genetic field and shearing methods are constantly provided to the producers free of charge.
Our company acts as consignee agent of wool both in domestic and international
business.
When in need of a good business transaction with your wool do not hesitate to
require our assistance.
